Letters to the EditorFrom Our Readers, which may be edited for clarity and space. Margaret comments and asks: Such a well laid out internet news source publication, thank you! I'm not sure if writing to the editor with my request is appropriate, but I would like to see something written by a former (or still using) WebTV user that has gone on to using an actual computer. Perhaps with humor, but with the actual facts of both ease and troublesome navigation findings one has to learn with using a computer. Is there any chance of this sort of thing being written for your publication? Understand, I certainly am not offering myself as a webnewsnow writer! I have no computer, nor do I intend an any time soon purchase of one. But I would like to see comparison information given between set-top "boxes" and computers with internet access. Thank you for listening, and considering? Margaret ~ Editor: Thank you for adding WebNewsNow to your news resources, and your timing was good with wanting to see something like a set-top to computer comparison written. Take a look at Frank Solis having a bit of fun with such in this issue, and be sure to come back to see a more in depth comparison done by SBerry in a later publication. Thomas greets the WNN Staff with: Hello, in another issue you had someting on instant messengers. Will you be giving your readers anything more on instant messengers? My mother has a new computer and she would like to have some good background on all of those. On my computer I use the MSN one most of the time, but I would like her to have an unbiased look at anything that is available. Thomas Inglern ~ Editor: Whew! Are you a mind reader? Our publisher has picked this issue for a continued write on Instant Messengers, with a review on the AT&T one. Now you'll have at least three to give your mother background on. ~ Editor Notes: For sending letters to the WebNewsNow Editor, simply email what you may like to see answered, or what you'd like to see an article written about. You can also let the WNN staff know if you'd like to become one of our contributing journalists by sending a tell of what you may care to write about for publication in our future editions, along with, if available, the internet address for an example of your writing. We've welcomed articles on PCs, Macs, the WWW in general and/or current hardware/software issues from journalists worldwide!

Editor's Note
In our last issue, we inadvertently left off the name of one of our
journalists. We'd like to apologize to Aylana, who did such a marvelous
job with the Alt.ADR article, and thank her for sharing her information
with our readers.

Breath ragged, you pause for a moment to scan the area for the enemy.
Your last run was a good one: five kills, and you yourself only slightly wounded.
Spying a ladder across the room, you consider the possibility of putting your sniper
rifle to use. From that high vantage point, you could easily pick off more
victims, plus, your portable rocket launcher is becoming quite heavy. Before
sprinting toward the ladder, you take one more glance around the area, and
see no one in site. You burst free from your temporary hiding place at
full speed...40', 30', 20', 10'. You suddenly hear the distinct sound
of a rocket explosion, not twenty feet behind you. You curse under
your breath, and with five feet to go, you leap at full run toward
the ladder and smash into it, almost blasting the wind from your lungs.
However, keeping your focus, you grasp the ladder rungs and drag yourself
to the top in a matter of seconds. You quickly bring your rifle to bear
and peer down the scope at your attacker. A moment later - six kills. A
smile finds its way on to your lips as you crouch on the platform looking
for your next target. Unexpectedly, a searing pain fills your body as you
realize you've just been shot with a flak cannon - you should have remembered
the ladder on the other side of the platform. Darkness fills your eyes as you
hear the words, "You be dead!" The message: "You are dead, press fire to
respawn!" flashes on your computer screen - waiting to see if you are ready
to rejoin the endless cycle of online 3d gaming. Are you
ready? Continue...
Is Your Domain Name a Trademark Infringement?
By
Shelley Lowery
I recently received an email from a concerned fellow internet business owner asking for my opinion on an issue that could literally destroy his internet business and the business of several other domains involved.
He had received legal notice from a prominent company, stating that he needed to relinquish his use and rights to his website domain name because it contained three letters that infringed upon their trademark and their domain name. This same company also contacted several other internet business owners and made similar demands.
Should a company that registers a specific trademark have the ability to
destroy numerous businesses that legitimately registered domain names?
Should a company that registers a trademark have the responsibility of
ensuring that a domain name registration agency doesn't issue domain
names that may be a trademark infringement? Or should an internet
business have the responsibility of making sure a potential name
doesn't infringe upon a registered trademark? Where does the responsibility
lie? Continue...

You know that F-key saver you are using? Awesome tool for webpage builders,
isn't it? How else could you have a multitude of favorite links on one page
without it? In this issue of WebNewsNow, John and Cathy Owens of Owens4
(the original creators of this widely used and versatile tool) share with us
their thoughts on family life, WebTV, and their recent move to a personal
computer.
What started out as a personal organizational idea turned into a tool that is
utilized by many websites. Realizing that WebTV keyboards only offered seven
"F-keys" for quick access to favorites sites, John and Cathy set out to put all
of their favorites on one page and assign that to one of the original F-keys. This
allowed the use of WebTV's other six for sites most frequented i.e., transloaders,
tools pages, newsgroups, etc. Focusing on organization and ease of use, John came up
with the idea of 24 buttons in a frame which provided "one screen access with
no scrolling." Voilå, the "F-Key Saver" was a
reality. Continue...

Here we are, once again, with yet another review of
instant messengers. Last time, I reviewed the Yahoo! and MSN messengers. Both
of these programs were of good quality, and their services were outstanding.
Today, I will be reviewing the AT&T Instant Messenger - better known as "I'm Here."
This Instant Messenger is a multi-compatible one allowing instant messaging with AIM,
MSN, and the POWWOW systems. This is an impressive system.
Now on to the review...

Why WebTV?
By Frank Solis
Simply stated, WebTV is a small box approximately 7x8x3" that easily connects
to your existing phone line and your TV set. It has no storage memory, nor
disk or CD-ROM drive. Operating memory and programs are contained on a remote
server. The latest models have a slot for smart cards, or credit cards, and
though currently limited in use, plans are being made to expand this capability.
If you're interested in keeping up with records for your home, tax information,
or playing some of the newest games available, then a computer would probably
better suit your needs. However, if you are primarily interested in email and
surfing the web, then you really should consider a

Whogabooga's View on WebTV ClubsBy Whoga
The WebTV newsgroups are an invaluable source of information
for WebTV users - from tools to html resources, and from page
building advice to news on set-top-boxes; on and on it goes.
I post regularly in three groups, and I generally find most of
the information available there helpful. However, as with all good
things, "serpents have made their way into Eden" in the form of trolls.
Trolls come into newsgroups and destroy the normal flow of conversation,
while adding nothing. They insult and demean people for reasons known only
to themselves, and while some people try to fight them in flame wars, these are
fights no one wins. It makes one wonder why WNI refuses to enforce its own
TOS [Terms of Service].
